William L Brandt, Jr.

There are times when we make history and there are times when history makes us. Our American soldiers don't fight because they hate what's in front of them. They uphold the ideals of our American freedoms because they love what's behind them. “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here…” In his inaugural speech, President John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country. William L. Brandt, Jr. contributed to the manpower of our great nation in the United States Army. A true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength, but by the size of his heart. Bill was a simple man, a good man who loved life’s little things like food shopping, a good deal and sports. After a brief illness, on Wednesday May 19, 2021, day was done. Gone the sun, from the lake, from the skies. Bill’s flag was retired at 2100 hours from his home in Gloucester City.

Bill was born in Baltimore, MD and had been a longtime Gloucester City neighbor. He worked as a truck driver for Overnite Transportation in Philadelphia, PA and cheered on the Philadelphia Eagles. He had been a longtime and dedicated member of the Townsend C. Young VFW Post 3620 where he served as Commander and American Legion Post 135 both in Gloucester City. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans Army/Navy Garrison 52 in National Park.

What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others is and remains immortal. Bill is the widower of his late wife Jean M. (nee Dighan) and is the father of; Teri & her husband William Midgett Margaret “Maggie” & her husband Brian Moore and Danielle & her husband Chuck Kiefrieder. Mr. Brandt is the proud grandfather of 25 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild. He is also survived and will be sadly missed by his sisters Charlotte Sanders and Michelle Brandt.

Relatives, neighbors, friends, legionnaires and veterans are invited to gather with the Brandt family. We’ll be sharing army stories, talking trash on the Eagles and laughing about finding those good deals on Wednesday morning between 9:30 am and 11:30 am at Creran Celebration Etherington & Creran Funeral Homes 700 Powell St. Gloucester City where a remembrance ceremony will begin at 11:30 am. A United States Army military commemoration ceremony will follow at 1:30 pm at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery 350 Province Line Rd. Wrightstown.
