Died suddenly on Tuesday, February 14, 2012, age 81, of Blackwood, beloved husband of Rita (Macey). A graduate of Audubon High School, he served in the NJ National Guard during the Korean Conflict and was a life-long patriot. He was a Project and Site Manager with Catalytic Construction Company of Philadelphia, building fossil and nuclear energy power plants nationwide.
‘Rip' was actively involved in the ‘family business' - the Audubon All-Girl Drum and Bugle Corps, which was founded by his parents, Joseph and Florence Bernert. He was music and drill instructor for the Audubon All-Girl Corps, as well as the Archer-Epler Musketeers from Upper Darby, PA, leading them to State and National Championships. Other drum corps affiliations were with the Reading Buccaneers, the Pittsburgh Rockets, Empire Statesmen, Miami Vanguards, Bracken Cavaliers, Towson Cadets and the Reilly Raiders. He was inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame, as well as the New Jersey and Pennsylvania State Drum and Bugle Corps Halls of Fame. Currently, Bill dedicated his musical talents as the arranger and conductor of his beloved Audubon Bon Bons Alumni Chorus, while continuing to serve as Co-Director of the Audubon Bon Bons Alumni Association. He devoted time to the youth of the Camden County area as Assistant Coach for Girl's Basketball at Bishop Eustace Prep and Haddonfield High School for many years.
He is survived by his wife Rita, son William Bernert of Wilmington, DE, daughters Jennifer (Harry) Hartman of Garnet Valley, PA , and Rita Anne Gloekler of Odenton, MD, three cherished grandchildren, Pauline, Rita and Abby, and many nieces, nephews and friends. His parents and one brother, Joe, preceded him in death.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Our Lady of Hope Parish, St. Agnes Church, 701 Little Gloucester Rd, Blackwood, NJ 08012 on Monday, February 20, from 5-8PM and Tuesday, February 21 from 10-11AM, Funeral Mass to follow at 11AM. Interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Chews Landing, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to St. Agnes Church at the address above.
