Walter C. Karlsen, Jr., 81 of Somerdale, affectionately loved as Walt, passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a life and legacy woven with love, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to his people. A man of routine and simple joys, Walt started every day with his faithful cup of coffee, a small but sacred ritual that grounded him in a world he often navigated with social awkwardness but with immense heart.
Walt made his living as a proud heavy equipment operator for the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 025 in Philadelphia, where he worked as a dredger. The work was tough, but so was he… steadfast and reliable, with hands that bore the story of a life built on grit and dedication. Yet for all the strength he showed in his profession, Walt’s greatest pride was found not on the job site, but in the roles he cherished most: father, grandfather, and family man.
He was, without question, a great dad and, by all accounts, “Pop pop of the Year.” He never missed an opportunity to cheer from the sidelines, whether it was at barrel racing events—his proudest moments shared beside his daughter and granddaughter - or during simple family days filled with laughter and togetherness. His passion for horse shows was only rivaled by the thrill of the hunt at local auctions, where Walt found joy in treasure hunts for hidden gems and quirky finds.
But perhaps his happiest memories were made with his family in the most magical place on earth, Disney World. Walt lit up during those fun-filled trips, each moment a testament to the way he lived: quietly, with deep love, always giving, and ever-present in the lives of those he held dearest.
Though he was a man of few words, Walt’s actions spoke volumes. His legacy is one of loyalty, gentle humor, and heartfelt dedication to the people he loved. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered—not just for what he did but for who he was: a loving presence, a routine keeper, a treasure hunter, and a hero in the eyes of his family.
Mr. Karlsen is survived by his girls, Marie & her husband Chuck Petronis and Judi Monzo. Walt is the proud pop pop of Samantha & her husband Luca, Brooke Williams, Ricky Monzo and the great-grandfather of lil Luca and Zayden. Walt is also survived and will be deeply missed by his brother Stanley “Stosh” Karlsen, his nieces and nephews, Julia Karlsen and Stanley Karlsen as well as his faithful, furry companion, Dunkin.
The time-honored tradition of reuniting those we love with nature will be held privately. Please feel free to share your memories, photos, and stories of Walt below
