Stewart Gene Ettinger

September 27, 1937 — February 8, 2025

Palmyra

Stewart Gene Ettinger passed peacefully on February 8, 2025. Devoted husband of 56 years to Carol Anne, father of Beth Ann, Amanda, and Alexandra. Pop Pop of Bern, Robert, Rebecca, Josh, and Sarah. Great grandfather to Benjamin and Madeline. Brother to Larry and Marilyn.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, to Samuel and Rose, Stewart graduated from Upper Darby High School. In his pursuit of becoming a journalist, he honed his craft at Penn State University and Charles Morris Price School of Journalism. He served as a US Army Reservist from 1960 to 1966. Always a man of words, he completed Clerk Typist training during basic training at Fort Knox, KY. He was proud of his service to our country and he wore his veteran hat most days, unless he was wearing a Phillies or Eagles hat.

Stewart spent his career as a journalist for 35 years at The Courier Post where his newspaper byline evolved from Stewart Ettinger to Stu Ettinger over the years and his colleagues called him Stardust Stu. His writing also evolved through the years, from entertainment to dining to classic cars. His immediate family reaped the benefits of going out to restaurants for his “Dining Out” column reviews and they often returned to establishments where they would see his articles posted on the wall. Throughout his journalism career, he also shared time with his family at concerts, sporting events, Ice Capades, Ringling Brothers Circus, and many other events.

Known for his love of classic cars, card playing, cigars, the beach, antiquing, mummers, parades, photography, “trash picking” and rehabbing old furniture, maintaining the summer garden and our family pool, naps, peanut chews, nuts of any kind, crème donuts, Tastykakes, the Phillies and Eagles, Stewart always knew how to have a good time. He possessed a unique ability to strike up a conversation with anyone he encountered, whether they were an old acquaintance, a new friend, or a stranger. He retained a wealth of knowledge about television and movie actors. Before there was Google, it was common for family and friends to call Stewart to ask him about an actor they saw to find out who they were or what other shows or movies they may have seen the actor in and he would know the answer. Stewart could also be seen photographing loved ones’ events, both milestones and everyday life. If you’ve ever had his mashed potatoes, they were unmatched by any restaurant and could be consumed in great quantities without ever feeling too full.

Stewart deeply loved his wife Carol Anne and his family. He went to great lengths to provide for them and spend time with them throughout his life. Stewart’s view of the world through his love, words, and camera lens will preserve and share his perspective for generations to come.

In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Stewart and his zest for life, please enjoy “Dining Out” with your family, cheer for the Phillies and Eagles, or put your toes in the sand!
