Robert J. Stone

Being a sports fanatic is a complex matter, in part irrational but not unworthy. It’s a relief from the seriousness of our world. Ya see, winning isn’t everything, but it beats everything that comes in second. Robert J. Stone was a serious sports fan who enjoyed being the boss on the field, the man in black… the umpire. “Blue”. He enjoyed watching his granddaughter play soccer and flag football. Bob was funny, in a sarcastic but fun way. He was incredibly generous and would do anything in his power to help you. He was just, great! Bob is either going to heaven in a wheelbarrow or hell in a shopping cart. One day we will know how lucky we were to have known his love with wonder, not grief. Bob passed away peacefully at home, after just 62 innings, surrounded by the love and presence of his family.

Bob was born in and spent most of his years as a Gloucester City neighbor before spending time in Westville. His home had contributed to the manpower of our nation upholding the ideals of our American Freedoms as a seaman recruit serving on the USS Woodrow Wilson in the United States Navy. He worked in construction for Pullman Services in the Philadelphia market suburb, Swedesboro. Bob loved to play softball and hed been in many adult leagues as a player and as an umpire. Faith and family were most important to him and he had been a lifetime parishioner of the holy city’s St. Mary’s Catholic Community.

This pain is like a heavy stone. A heavy heart is a heavy load to carry alone. Bob was predeceased by his dad, the late, Robert E. Stone and his sister, the late, Jean Stone. He is survived by and leaves to cherish his memory; his son Bobby, his mother Joan (nee Harvey) Stone and his siblings; William, Michael, Joan Crawford, Joy & her husband Neal Halquist, Joe and John. Bob is the proud grandfather of Harper Rose Stone. He is also survived and will be sadly missed by his dear friend Jennifer Dicerbo as well as many nieces and nephews.

Relatives, friends and neighbors are invited to gather with the Stone family to take comfort in each other in tribute and in thanksgiving on Monday morning between 10:00 am and 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church 426 Monmouth St. Gloucester City where we will celebrate his life through faith at 11:00 am. A graveside tribute and the rendering of United States Navy military honors will immediately follow at New St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bellmawr. The Stone family specifically requests, please NO flowers.
