Jeanne A. Hagarty, S.F.O. (nee Duke), a true Servant of God, went home to Heaven peacefully at the age of 87 surrounded by the love of her family on Tuesday, February 16th, at her home in Delanco.
Known as "Grammy" to many and "The Hat Lady" to more, Jeanne had an unwavering faith, which she put into practice every day. She prayed for everyone she met, and many she didn't, and wished until the last day that each one was thanked for everything they did for her.
Jeanne was a longtime parishioner of Jesus the Good Shepherd Parish, St. Peter's Church, in Riverside, where she took an active leadership role. She served as president of the St. Peter's School PTA, the year of the school's first annual carnival. At the time of her passing, she was the Parish Council Recorder, an Extraordinary Minister, a lector and altar server at the parish, a member of the Bereavement Committee and Choir, a member of the National Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order (S.F.O.), and active with the Cursillo Movement. Jeanne also dedicated time and energy to the St. Peter's Altar & Rosary Society, the St. Peter's Choir, and New Jersey Right to Life. She taught both parish Bible classes and CCD, along with training altar servers. She was at her best when she was actively serving God and her parish community.
A dedicated wife, loving mother, and extraordinary grandmother, Jeanne was active in her children's and grandchildren's lives. She volunteered as a Girl Scout cookie mom and as a Cub Scout Den Mother, among other things. She loved to travel, play cards and games, debate the issues of the day, go on adventures, sew things for her family, see live theater, and collect angels.
Jeanne was born to Mary Lynch and was raised in Philadelphia where she attended Little Flower and Transfiguration schools before graduating from Villa Maria Academy in Malvern. In 1948, she and her growing family moved to Delanco. Jeanne worked at Miller Moving & Storage and as a procurement manager at General Electric, before beginning her 25-year career as a bus driver for the Delran Board of Education, retiring in 1993.
Jeanne was the widow of her late husband, Edward G. Hagarty, Sr. She is the mother of Dan and his wife Lindsey, Peter and his wife Sally, Francis and his wife Anna, Cheryl and her husband Robert Oryl, the late Jeanne Rader and her husband Phillip, and the late Dr. Edward G. Hagarty, Jr. Jeanne was the proud grandmother of Scott and Matthew Rader, Ian, Colin, Sarah, Lauren, Kaitlyn and Francis Hagarty, Cassandra, Rob and Ben Oryl, and step-grandmother of Frank and his wife Carey, Ben, David, Eric and Becky Galdo. She is also survived by her sister Patricia and her husband Enrique Arregui, and nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 am at Jesus the Good Shepherd Parish, St. Peter's Church, Bridgeboro and Hancock Sts., Riverside. Relatives and friends are invited to join the Hagarty family to remember and pay tribute to Jeanne on Wednesday evening between 6 pm and 8 pm and on Thursday morning between 10 am and 11 am at St. Peter's Church. As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to Jesus the Good Shepherd Parish, 101 Middleton St. Riverside, NJ 08075.
