Janet Penton

December 31, 1943 — June 2, 2017

(nee Walker) On June 2, 2017 of Sewell. Age 73. Devoted mother of Michelle Ulak, Kimberly Penton and Heather Penton. Loving grandmother of Michael, Justin, Wayde, Kyne and Boltin. Proud great-grandmother of Alana, Selena and Barry. Dear sister of Judy Holden and the late Barbara Gartland.

She loved her children with all that she had. Family was everything to her and her family loves her with everything we have. My mom always worked hard to keep us girls together and we struggled but was determined to raise us to the best of her ability. We had a lot of great Christmas' where she made sure we got what we wanted. Her granddaughter was the light of her life as was Alana (great-granddaughter), along with her other grandkids and great-grandkids that she never met. Everyone always called her Mom or Me-Mom and she loved everyone and everyone loved her. She loved to laugh and smile and would give or help anyone to where it would be the last dime she had.

She always wore her cross and kissed it up to God and prayed a lot for us kids. She was a feisty woman who never failed to voice her opinion.

Mom loved playing cards with my friends and dancing on the porch on Burlington Street. She loved when we took her to Bellmawr Lake. We had great times laughing, everyone jumping in my car to run and watch the fireworks every Friday night in August. She loved to go out just to listen to music and have a cocktail. She like going to the bars to see us and meet all kinds of friends, drink her Malibu Bay Breeze and listen to the music. Her favorite song was "Wagon Wheel" and we would sing along and wave our hands to the beat. She also loved "I've had the Time of my Life" (from Dirty Dancing). She liked watching great movies: The Godfather, Dirty Dancing and Grease, to name a few. She loved Janet Jackson videos back in the day and Rod Stewart was her sweetheart. She enjoyed going out for seafood dinners and eat lots of shrimp and steak and mushrooms.

She would love when we would go buy her snacks and lay in bed in her room and watch TV. Mom had great times at Advanced Sub Acute playing bingo, drinking her coffee and eating the snacks people would give her and loved going to the activity room to see her friends. She always had crushes on the young guys who played guitar or even paint her nails. She loved her cats who would sleep with her and keep her safe and not lonely.

My mom was my best friend and I always loved getting her haircut to make her look beautiful and feel great about herself. She was known to have pretty hands and nails so I would cut and paint both her finger and toe nails. She once worked for Zinman Furs on Admiral Blvd. in Camden and was a runway model for the fur coats because she was so beautiful.

She had the best and funniest sense of humor that would make anyone laugh, whether young or old.

She always said she was too tough and ornery to die but as time went on she was getting weak and had said she didn't want to live this way, after breaking her hip and needing a wheelchair. I know my mom is not suffering anymore and will be at peace in heaven with her mother whom she adored and took care of until the day she passed. My mom said to me so many times how much she missed her mom Anna. Not a day went by where she wasn't thinking of her and I remember her saying "take me home" and I said "where?" and she said "to Camden" where she lived when she was young. She did have dementia so she still thought she lived there.

She will be dearly missed by many people. Those who knew her, loved her.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Memorial Service Wednesday 7:00 PM at the Etherington Funeral Home, Gloucester City. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family.
