Herbert "Sonny" F King

June 9, 1949 — January 24, 2023

Life is like a box of chocolates. You never do know what you're going to get, but “Sonny” kept it simple, Stu…. Herbert F. “Sonny” King, Sr. kept family first and didn’t need much, just his Natty Ice and pack of smokes. He was someone we could love and understand, just a simple man.

The life given us by nature is short and this world is not my home, I'm just a-passing through. On Tuesday January 24, 2023, The ol’ country road had taken him home. After just 73 years, Sonny disappeared into the potter’s grounds.

Sonny was born in Camden and had spent all of his days as a Gloucester neighbor. He was a self made man spending many hours and miles on the road, working as a truck driver. Wherever there was water, Sonny would be fishing. He’d fish a puddle if he knew there was a catch in there. Sonny was a man of little words but compassionate action. He enjoyed time riding around on his bicycle, at home on his patio and being in the company of family, throwin’ shoes, pitching washers and being a part of the family softball pickup games.

Fishing stories are always about the one that “got away”. After a brief illness, Sonny had gotten away and leaves to cherish his memory; his loving and doting wife of 30 years, Barbara (nee Ludwick) and his daughter Barbara & her husband Javier Feliciano. Sonny is the proud grandfather of; Javier, Lucas, Armando, Neena, Abigail, Jacob, Samantha, James, Jr., Hunter, Jordan and Adrianna. He is also survived and will be sadly missed by many siblings.

Some memories never leave your heart. Like the salt in the sea; they become part of you - and you carry them. Just as every salty tear returns to the sea, Sonny was predeceased and now reunited with his children; Herb, Jr. Lillian Schenck and James King. Although we are separated by death, we remain connected by love.

Relatives, friends and neighbors are invited to gather with the Sonny’s family. We’ll be laughing at the old fishing stories, listening to the old classic country music and sharing our heartfelt stories on Thursday evening between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm at Creran Celebration Etherington & Creran Funeral Homes 700 Powell St. Gloucester City.
