Rocky Iacovone

August 3, 1936 — March 19, 2025

Deptford

Yogi Berra said, “Love is the most important thing in the world, but baseball is pretty good too.” Talent may get you on the field, effort and attitude will keep you there. Herbert R. “ROCKY” Iacovone was a lover, he held his faith dear and possessed an innate athletic talent. He filled his life with the great American pastime, his family, and relaxing days soaking in the warm sun. On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, after 88 innings, Rocky’s sun had set below our horizon and his home, surrounded by the love of his family in Deptford. Some days you win, some days you lose, and some days it rains. Thank you for always being there, rain or shine.

Rock’s sun had risen from Camden during the summer of 1936. The New York Yankees and Giants were racing for the pennant. He had spent his formative years in Woodbury and graduated from Woodbury High School. Rocky had been a longtime Gloucester neighbor and respected as a great sportsman. He was a tough out, even in his later years playing men's softball. Rocky made his career as a Maitre d’ and banquet manager across South Jersey until his retirement. He enjoyed retired life in Deptford or under the sun, sinking his feet in the warm sand on the beach in Sea Isle City and Avalon. Rocky played the game his whole life and was inducted into the South Jersey Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999. He was a congregant of the Brooklawn United Methodist Church as well as an avid golfer sinking an ace at Pinehurst. Athletics aren't so much about the body. It’s about the heart and mind.

Rocky was a dedicated husband, father, brother and grandfather. He is survived by the love of his soulmate, Alice (nee Robinson) Iacovone, and was established in love 65 years ago. Rocky leaves to cherish his memory his children; Allison & her husband Michael Zizzamia, Jill & her husband Charles Walmsley, Rocco & his wife Christine Iacovone, and was predeceased by his late son Ronald Iacovone. Rocky is the proud grandfather of; Melissa Iacovone, Rocco Zizzamia, Eric Walmsley, Christopher Walmsley, Jordyn Iacovone, Courtney Iacovone, and great-grandfather of Braydon Walmsley.

Relatives, neighbors, friends, teammates, and ballplayers are invited to gather with the Iacovone family. First pitch will be on Wednesday morning, 10:00 am at Creran Celebration Etherington & Creran Funeral Homes 700 Powell St, Gloucester where we will take comfort in each other and celebrate life in faith at 12:00 pm, Pastor Daniel Amey, presiding. The time-honored tradition of reuniting those we love with nature will be held privately. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Iacovone family using the link below.
