Glenn G. "Turk" Thomas

January 10, 1954 — December 18, 2024

Gloucester City

We could all use this advice from an old farmer;

Life is simpler when you plow around the stump. The best sermons are lived, not preached. Live a good, honorable life… Then when you get older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God. Most times, it just gets down to common sense. Glenn G. “Turk” Thomas was your average guy. He believed in rolling up his sleeves, putting in a hard day’s work, and filling his days with those he loved, starting each week with a Sunday family dinner. It only takes a moment to make a moment, those were fishing and hunting with Uncle Bob, little Bobby, Glenn, and Harry. Fishing is not just about catching fish; it's about understanding the delicate balance of nature, and to go fishing is a chance to wash one's soul with pure air renewing deep relationships.

Souls ain’t born, souls don’t die. Souls ain’t made of earth, ain’t made of water, ain’t made of sky. On Wednesday, December 18, 2024 we handed Glenn G. “Turk” Thomas over from time to eternity, just a lil farther than the sun. “Turk” passed away at Cooper Hospital in Camden at the age of 70.

Just like the end, Turk’s days began in Camden. He was a longtime Gloucester neighbor deeply invested in Gloucester sports and taking care of our city making his career in Public Works. Just a good ol’ blue-collar boy keeping things simple, working hard but playing hard too. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting, ok… and antiquing. He cheered on Gloucester sports, of course, the “Iggles” and Phightin Phils as well as the Boston Bruins. He never missed any of his kids games and was faithfully their biggest supporter.

“Turk” leaves big shoes to fill but also a warm afterglow of love, dedication, ethics and values. He leaves his loving wife of more than 49 years Diane (nee Reed) Thomas and is survived by his children Glenn & his wife Stacy Thomas, Harry & his wife Christine Thomas, and Shannon Thomas. “Turk” is the proud grandfather of; Brianna, Julianna, Landon, Owen, Chase, and Harper. He is also survived and will be sadly missed by his brothers John “Reds” Thomas and Bob & his wife Brenda Thomas as well as his sister-in-law Denise & her husband Jack Barron.

Relatives, friends, neighbors, and co-workers are invited to gather with the Thomas family. “Turk” loved sports. Everyone is invited to cheer on what he meant to each of us and wear your favorite sports team proudly. We’ll come together to take comfort in each other on Saturday between 9:00 am and 11:30 am at Creran Celebration Etherington & Creran Funeral Homes where a remembrance ceremony with a reflection of “Turk’s” life to follow, during which those who wish to speak and share memories are welcome at 11:30 am.

In inspiration to pay it forward, in memory of Glenn, and in lieu of flowers please bring a non-perishable item to the funeral home with you to make a donation to Philabundance or make your donation privately at philabundance.org or by using the link below.
