What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, and hope for the future. We follow traditions that our parents set, that their parents taught them and their parents brought with them. The Danish brought us cookie cutters, the Italians brought us caroling and the seven fishes and the Germans brought wreaths, mulled wine, and candy canes. Diana M. “Sue” Souder (nee Hatton) deeply embraced her family and our traditions. She loved the holidays, particularly Christmas, decorating each year to a theme and hosting family Christmas parties. Sue was the rock of the family, the matriarch. Her affable demeanor easily attracted friends to her. She was respected and well-loved as a devoted family woman.
The light of a candle’s flame has a special way of turning ordinary moments into something magical. For some, it’s a symbol of hope, a quiet reminder that even in the darkest times, there is light. Diana, Mom, Mom Mom, and Grandmom was the light of our life, and the frigid winter morning of Thursday, December 5, 2024, was our darkest time. Sue passed away at Complete Care in Voorhees. As we bring light to the dark places in our hearts, we’re hopeful for her everlasting peace in a warm afterglow of smiles and an echo of happy times and laughing times whispering down the ways.
Diana was born in Camden and had been a longtime Gloucester neighbor. She was as casual as they come, just as you are. Sue made her career as an office manager for Dr. Michael Marone and Dr. Ambrish Patel’s Family Practice in Voorhees. She enjoyed day trips and road trips, finding a good place to eat. She loved her dogs but acted like she didn't. She deeply loved, invested herself in, and nurtured her family.
Mrs. Souder has been the proud and doting wife of Donald W. Souder for the past 48 years. She is the example and the mother of Donald K. & his wife Kimberly, and Brian and his wife Taryn Souder. Sue is the proud grandmom of Donny and Joshua and Mom Mom of “her special girls” Hailey and Hannah. Diana is the sister of James Hatton, Jr., Michael Hatton, Patricia Burns, Edward Hatton and was predeceased by the late David Oxley, Richard Hatton, and Barbara Hatton.
Relatives, friends, and neighbors are invited to gather with the Souder family. We’ll come together in a tradition of farewell, to give thanks, pay tribute, and take comfort in each other on Wednesday morning between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm at Creran Celebration Etherington & Creran Funeral Homes 700 Powell St. Gloucester City with a remembrance ceremony and reflections of Diana will follow at 12:00 pm, during which those who wish to speak and share memories are welcome. A graveside tribute will conclude at Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro.
